This is a rare stunning well carved, beautifully proportioned ceremonial tray used for the distribution of Sago Leaves at Initiation ceremonies from the Kandingai Village of Papua New Guinea. This is a primitive ceremonial sago leaf tray with handle carved in the form of a crocodile head. This tray was used for both practical and ceremonial purposes. The topside is decorated with relief designs and the handle is shaped like a crocodile head. These trays were used mainly for serving Sago leaves at initiation ceremonies where food such as roasted balls of sago grubs were served to guests. The figures face upward so that when in use, the face can be seen. When not in use they are placed upside down on a rack above the head of the owner so that they can remain in contact. This is a wonderful ceremonial tray and would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
