This is a rare fabulous Carved Wood Round Ornate Stool from the Black Water Region, Papua New Guinea. An old Sepik stool, of wood, decorated with geometric motifs in relief and polychrome pigments. This stool is carved out of a single piece of wood with clan ochres. Stools of this type were only used by high-ranking tribal officials; most likely an orator or someone affiliated with the village council. The craftsmanship is beautiful, with a stylized male representative of the clan with a burnished finish. These stools are made by master carvers within the tribe. Estimated age 1970 to 80’s.
