This is a stunning Massim Gourd Lime Container carving from the Trobriand Islands, Milne Bay Province area of Papua New Guinea. This is a stunning Trobriand Massim gourd lime container with pig tusk and stopper made from rolled up leaf covered with fine basketwork. (I have not opened the stopper in order to leave it in its original condition as found). The pig tusk and the band of burnt-in curvilinear designs are typical of 20th century styles. Coconuts with wooden stoppers were also used. The powdered mineral lime is chewed with betel nut. At contact, special lime pots and spatulas were made from the skulls and bones of deceased relatives. Beautiful piece in very good condition!. This piece is a very rare find and truly should be sitting in a museum. The estimated age of the piece is between 1940’s to 1950’s.This is a stunning collectors piece.
